Death On Perpetual Display

Vladimir Lenin

The body of Soviet Union’s founder Vladimir Lenin has been encased and display in glass upon his death since Jan 21 1924 in Moscow's Red Square at Lenin's Mausoleum, commonly known as Lenin's Tomb.

Ho Chi Minh

Inspired by Lenin's Mausoleum in Moscow, the body of Vietnamese revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh body was put on display in a glass sarcophagus at Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum on August 29, 1975.

Ho Chi Minh died in 2 Sept 1969.

Mao Zedong

The embalmed body of Mao Zedong founder of the People's Republic of China was unveiled on 9 Sept 1977 in Chairman Mao Memorial Hall in the centre of Tiananmen Square in Beijing.

Mao Zedong died in 9 Sept 1976. He reportedly wished to be cremated.

Kim Il Sung, North Korea

Kim Il Sung considered the founding father of North Korea preserved body was unveiled on 8 July 1995.

Draped in a Workers Party of Korea flag, his body is on display at Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, also known as the Kim Il Sung Mausoleum.

Kim Il Sung died in 8 July 1994.

Kim Jong Il, North Korea

Kim Jong Il led North Korea after his father Kim Il Sung death in 1994. His body was put on display on 17 Dec 2012 a few floors below in the same shrine that houses his father.

Kim Jong Il died in 17 Dec 2011

Ferdinand Marcos

Marcos was president of the Philippines from 1965 to 1986, died in exile in Hawaii.

His remains were returned home in 1993 but his body was put on display inside the Marcos Museum and Mausoleum in the city of Batac.

Ferdinand Marcos died in 28 Sept 1989.

Pope John XXIII, The Vatican

Angelo Roncalli led the Catholic Church from 1958 until his death.

His body is now on display on 3 June 2001 at St. Peter's Basilica.

His coffin was exhumed in Jan 2001 after four decades as part of an effort to transfer his remains from a Vatican crypt.
Pope John XXIII died in 3 June 1963.
